Duct Tape Dummy: I must admit that there was one site that I went to that inspired me to do this project. It was A Furrsuiter (furry costume builder) but unfortunately their site is now gone. I just never had the time to do it, or so I thought. ^..^ Here I am Getting ready for my mummification. I'm in a pair of old blue renaissance tights and an old stained dress shirt. Not to shabby I might add.
Duct Taping The Dummy: Heheh Ok so I'm getting wrapped up in my work. Pardon the pun. I love trying new techniques and believe me this was definitely new to me. I had a friend who was visiting for a couple days help me on this project. We started Duct Taping me at the feet and going up to the neck. Ack! I cant breathe... *gasp!*
Removal of the Duct Tape: This part hurt!!! For all beginners like me who don't want their skin cut off as well, Please invest in a good pair of surgical scissors with the one side blunt so it slides between 2 layers easily without cutting. I had paper scissors which didn't cut the layers at all. So I had my leather sheers do the cutting. They sure cut my leather! I have two nips out of my left arm. small 1mm nips but they sure stung.
Stuffing & Finishing the Dummy: Now the next step in this process is to buy some iron tubing or strong PVC pipe that is 1" in diameter. Get 8 elbow joints and 2 T-Joints and secure them tightly onto the poles. Put this skeletal frame into the Duct Tape dummy skin and start stuffing it from foot to neck making sure to duct tape every few inches to keep the proper form of the mannequin and keeping the polyfill or foam from popping out. When you get to the neck, grab the foam core head and make a good sized hole in the center of the base of the neck. Make it at least 3/4 as deep as the head is tall and then clear out the remaining scrap foam. Next secure the head on the PVC pipe frame and begin duct taping the neck in an X pattern going under the arms and back around the neck. Do this a few times till you can hold the dummy by the head and have it not slip off. Now to keep it standing just bend the skelital frame in the proper direction to have it balance nicely. If the maniquin becomes a little tempermental on wanting to bend just tap it on the joints and that will stifin it up again.
Now if you want a more stable and permenant mannequin I would suggest filling it with Expansion Foam but be sure to completely seal off the entire suit or you will have a huge mess. It doesnt hurt to do a few extra wraps of duct tape on the seams where your assistant had to cut it open to get you out. Duct tape is cheep, Expansion foam isnt.
